While you’re at that beginner level, there are tons of fun to be had. You can lose yourself in painting for hours on end. I know there has been a time where I have personally snapped out of my painting daze hours later to realize I had missed lunch and should probably get something to eat. I was having so much fun with it that I didn’t realize how much time had passed.
This is a pretty easy hobby to get into, and even mastering it doesn’t take too long. However, I have a few tips that will help you ease into things and make painting simpler for you.
Choose a small canvas to start with. I think a 30cm x 30cm canvas is perfect for someone starting out.
Only take out one or two colors at a time in your tray. This makes things simpler for you and makes it less likely that you will get confused.
If you have trouble getting your diamonds to stay in place properly, you can place them in a zig-zag pattern.
Keep the canvas flat. A new canvas may curl and want to roll, but you can flatten it out by sticking some books on the corners while you work or covering the whole canvas with books before you start painting.
Use plenty of light. I like to work with a personal lamp when I am painting. This helps me see the difference between similar colors without straining my eyes.
Take breaks every so often. I find that if I bend over my painting for hours at a time, I end up with cramps and aches and my eyes feel tired. Every so often, I just take a little break, walk around, and refocus my eyes. Then, I can keep going at it for a long time.
